BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Sacred Heart University field hockey team opened the 2018 season with a 3-2 over Lock Haven win on Friday. The Pioneers received goals from Kelsy Hopkins, Olivia Lehane and Bridget LaRiccia in the win.

The Pioneers took the lead at 2:01 when Hopkins knocked home the contests' first goal.  Lehane SHU up 2-0 at 26:30 after receiving a pass off a corner and firing the shot home.  Lock Haven scored nearly four minutes later to cut the deficit to 2-1 before Larricia scored at 52:18 to give the Pioneers a two goal lead. Lock Haven scored with nearly two minutes remaining in regulation, but it wasn't enough to get past the Pioneers.

SHU returns to action on Sunday, August 26, when the Pioneers take on Lehigh at 4 p.m. on the road in Bethlehem, Pa.

The Scoring

• Julia Chang took a shot on goal and was knocked down by the Lock Haven goalkeeper and Hopkins collected the rebound on the backside and put the ball away for 1-0 advantage

• Lehane made it 2-0 SHU at 26:30 after receiving a pass from Allie Brouhard off a penalty corner

• Lock Haven answered nearly four minutes later as Tamia Roach put home a ball after a pass off a penalty corner from Alyscia Smith.

• Colleen McAninley inserted a penalty corner to LaRiccia in the far corner, who tipped the ball past the goalkeeper.

• Lock Haven put one more on the board after Dana-Lee De Gannes put one home after an unsettled situation in front of the net.

• Hailey Power made 10 saves in net for the Pioneers

• SHU avenged its 2017 season-opening 4-1 loss against Lock Haven

• Hopkins' goal was the sixth of her career

• Lehane's goal was the first of her collegiate career

• The assist was Brouhard's first of the season and ninth of her career

• LaRiccia's goal was her second career game-winning goal, as she previously scored one in a 1-0 win over Lehigh on Sept. 3, 2017.

• The assist was the fourth of McAninley's career.
