Men's Volleyball Falls To UC San Diego In Season Opener

The Sacred Heart University men's volleyball team opened its 2019 campaign with a 3-0 loss to visiting University of California San Diego Friday night at the Pitt Center. The loss drops the Pioneers to 0-1 on the year, while the Tritons improve to 1-2.

SHU was led by a 12-kill effort of Emerson Waumans, who hit .348 on the evening. Noah Ricchetti handed out 28 assists for the Pioneers, while Zak Kakos led the team with 11 digs

The Pioneers return to action on Tuesday, January 15, when they host Stevens Tech at 6:00 pm

First Set; UCSD 30 - SHU 28

  • UCSD jumped out to the first three points, before three-straight from SHU tied the match
  • After a Tritons point, the Pioneers scored four of five to build an 8-5 lead, before the Tritons rallied back to 11-10
  • Back-to-back hitting errors pushed the Pioneers lead to three, before an ace from Ricchetti pushed the SHU lead to 14-10 and force a UCSD timeout
  • The Tritons rallied for three of the next four, forcing a Pioneer timeout with SHU leading 15-13
  • SHU led 20-17, before a 4-0 run, that included consecutive Berkeley Miesfeld aces to put the Tritons in front, 21-20 and forcing a Pioneer timeout
  • Miesfeld served an ace out of the timeout, before a service error gave the serve back to the Pioneers; trailing 22-21
  • Collin Shannon's kill on the next was answered by Michael McLaughlin, before blocks by Harrison and Shane Benetz gave the Tritons set point; 24-22
  • Benetz served long to keep SHU in the set, and a Shannon hitting error brought the Pioneers even, 24-24
  • Harrison killed the first serve out of the timeout to give the Tritons their second set point
  • Chatteron tipped a kill into the middle of the floor, knotting the score 25-25
  • Harrison rifled a kill to the back line for a 26-25 UCSD lead, but served into the net for the eighth tie
  • A tip-kill from Vlad Pesich gave UCSD its fourth set match, before a Ricchetti kill evened the set once again
  • A long rally that ended with a UCSD hitting error gave SHU the 28-27 lead, but Chatteron served long, tying the score once again
  • Connor Walbrecht served an ace for the Tritons fifth set point and Benetz and Shannon blocked down the set winner

Second Set: UCSD 25 – SHU 16

  • A Tom Wiesniewski ace gave SHU a 4-0 start to the second set
  • UCSD scored five of seven points to close within 6-5
  • After a Pioneers point, the Tritons scored four-straight to take a 9-7 lead
  • A Chatteron kill ended that run, that UCSD followed with a 3-0 run to build a 12-8 edge
  • The Pioneers would close within two, 16-14 on a McLaughlin kill, before a 5-2 run by UCSD pushed the advantage to five and forced a SHU timeout
  • A Harrison ace capped three straight points out of the timeout, making the score 24-16, and forcing a second SHU timeout
  • A kill from Jimenez provided the set-winner

Third Set; UCSD 25 – SHU 22

  • The Pioneers opened the set with four straight started with four-straight, behind the serve of Ricchetti
  • UCSD pulled within two, 7-5, before three straight points went to SHU for a 10-5 lead and forced a Tritons timeout
  • The Pioneers pushed the lead to five, 12-7, capped by a Tritons service error
  • The Tritons scored four of the next five, capped by a block from Shannon and Pesich, to force a SHU timeout, with the Pioneers leading 13-11
  • A UCSD service error out of the break pushed the lead to 14-11, before three straight Tritons points tied the score 14-14
  • After three ties, Bruce Curtis checked in and served an ace to give UCSD its first lead, 17-16
  • Ricchetti drilled a kill to draw the Pioneers at 17-17
  • A Shannon kill was followed by a SHU attack error to give the Tritons a 19-17 edge
  • SHU trailed 22-20, before kills from Chatteron and Waumans brought the Pioneers into a 22-22 tie and forced a Tritons timeout
  • A SHU service error was followed by a block from Pesich and Walbrecht to give the Tritons set point, 24-22
  • A Pioneer hitting error ended the match
