Sacred Heart University senior Gianna Scioletti was named the Northeast Conference Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday. The middle blocker helped the Pioneers to a 3-0 week to earn the second-seed in the upcoming NEC Tournament.
A native of Westborough, Mass., Scioletti became the Pioneers' all-time leader in blocks during a week in which she recorded 22 blocks. She averaged 2.2 blocks per set on the week, with at least six in each match during the week. Scioletti had her best defensive match in her final home contest, recording two solo blocks and seven block assists in the win over Bryant. On the offensive side, she contributed 15 kills in the three victories.
Over the last 10 matches, Scioletti has 47 blocks, with nine in a five-set win at Hartford to begin the streak. She has at least one block in all but one match this season. Over the last 13 matches, she has had six or more blocks on six occasions, including each of the last three.
Scioletti, a graduate of Westborough High School, has 102 blocks this season, one block shy of the program's single season record. She moved into first-place all-time on Saturday in career blocks and enters the tournament with 312 blocks.
The Pioneers finished the regular season at 18-11 overall and 11-3 in NEC play. The second-seed in the NEC Tournament, SHU takes on third-seeded LIU in the second NEC semifinal Friday, November 22 at 6:00 pm. The NEC Tournament will be played at Robert Morris, the regular season champion, who takes on fourth-seeded Central Connecticut State on Friday.
