Baseball Defeats LIU Brooklyn 6-5 to Earn First NEC Win of the Season

BRONX, N.Y. – The Sacred Heart University baseball team defeated LIU Brooklyn 6-5 Friday afternoon at Houlihan Park to earn its first NEC win of the season. With the win, the Pioneers improve to 4-11 on the season and 1-0 in NEC-play, while LIU Brooklyn drops to 2-11 on the season and 0-1 in the NEC.

Cooper Thompson got the start and earned the win, giving up four runs on six hits and striking out five in six innings of work. Austin Markmann led the SHU offense, going 2-for-3 with three RBI's in the win. Stephen Thibault, Justin Jordan and Alex Perry drove in a run apiece in the win.

  • Cooper Thompson got the start and earned the win, giving up four runs on six hits and striking out five in six innings of work

  • Baylor Sundahl earned the save after giving up one run on one hit and striking out three in the final three innings of relief

  • Austin Markmann went 2-for-3 with three RBI's

  • Jake Frasca, Justin Jordan, Danny Glendon and Stephen Thibault recorded two hits apiece in the win

  • Alex Perry, Thibault and Jordan drove in a run apiece in the win.

  • SHU struck first after Markmann delivered a two-run single in the first inning to give SHU a 2-0 lead

  • The Pioneers doubled the lead in the second after Perry delivered an RBI triple to right center, followed by a Thibault RBI single

  • The Blackbirds tallied three runs in the top of the third to cut the SHU lead to 4-3

  • The Pioneers responded with a run in the fifth off a Markmann sac-fly to score Thibault

  • LIU Brooklyn responded with a solo homer in the top of the sixth to cut the SHU lead to 5-4, but Jordan's RBI triple in the bottom of the inning pushed SHU's lead to 6-4

  • The Blackbirds were able to plate a run in the eighth, but the Pioneers held them off for the 6-5 win

NEXT TIME OUT

The Pioneers will be back in action on Saturday, Mar. 16, when SHU takes on LIU Brooklyn for an NEC doubleheader at Fordham, with game one starting at noon.
