Women's Lacrosse Falls at Brown in Non-Conference Finale

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Sacred Heart women's lacrosse team fell on the road to Brown, 17-2, in the Pioneers' final non-conference contest of the 2019 season. The loss drops the Pioneers to 1-8 on the season while the Bears even their record at 5-5 in 2019.

First Half (12-1 BROWN)

  • Brown dominated from the start of play, building a 6-0 lead less than seven minutes in before the Pioneers answered with their first goal of the day as Lydia Werlau found the back of the net with 22:31 left in the half
  • Following the Werlau strike, the Bears netted six unanswered goals to hold a 12-1 lead heading into halftime
  • The Bears owned dominating leads in shots (22-5), draw controls (11-3) and won the turnover battle 11-7

Second Half (17-2 BROWN)

  • After Brown tacked on two more at the start of the second half, Cassie Cesario broke up the string of eight consecutive Brown goals with her 12th of the season to make it 14-2
  • With the game already in-hand, Brown tacked on three more before the final horn sounded on the 17-2 victory for the Bears
  • Amy Cadle came on in relief of Shana Hecht in net across the final 7:47 of play as Hecht tallied nine saves in her 52+ minutes of action

NOTES

  • Cesario upped her goal scoring streak to six in-a-row as she now has tallied 18 of her team-high 19 points over the last six games alone
  • Werlau scored for the fourth straight game while increasing her goal total to 13 on the season which ranks second on the team (behind Hanna Wise's 18)
  • Taylor Sweeney and Claire McElhenny led the defensive effort for SHU as the pairing each tallied two caused turnovers in the loss
  • Hecht (nine saves, two ground balls) saw her double digit save streak come to an end as four straight games
  • Anna Finn set a new season-high while Casey Hannon matched her season-high as the duo each tallied two ground balls
  • Anna Mesham grabbed three of the seven draw controls on the day for SHU

NEXT GAME
SHU heads into the start of NEC play with a pair of home games this upcoming week. The Pioneers begin their conference slate with a Friday afternoon showdown with Bryant (3 PM) before playing host to CCSU on Sunday (1 PM).
