
Men's Volleyball Falls 3-1 To Harvard

The Sacred Heart University men's volleyball team dropped its EIVA opener, 3-1, to visiting Harvard University, Friday night at the Pitt Center. The loss drops the Pioneers to 3-1 overall and 0-1 in league play, while the Crimson improve to 4-2 on the year and 1-0 in EIVA action.
Connor Mahony led the Pioneers with a double-double, recording 13 kills and 11 digs. Rob Chatterton posted a team-best 15 kills, while Ramiro Balaguer handed out 40 assists.
The Pioneers return to action on February 7, when they host Mount Olive at 6:00 pm.
Turning Point
- With the score knotted at 23-23 in the third set, Rob Chatterton mis-served to give Harvard set point
- On the ensuing service, Connor Mahony had a miscue, giving the Crimson the win

- The Pioneers hit .152 on the day, with a .231 hitting percentage in the third set
- Chatterton finished with a .522 hitting percentage and a service ace

First Set (Harvard 28, SHU 26)
- The first four points of the set were scored on errors, as Harvard opened a 3-1 advantage
- A McIntosh block began a 5-2 Pioneer run, that featured a Chatterton ace and a Balaguer block, making the score 6-5 in favor of the Pioneers
- A Connor Mahony kill gave the Pioneers a 7-6 lead, but Harvard answered with three straight points, including a block by Matthew Ctvrlik and Ethan Smith, to take a 9-7 advantage
- The Pioneers tied the score at 9-9 and 10-10, before three consecutive errors gave Harvard a 13-10 advantage
- That lead would be extended t four, 19-15, on an Ethan Smith kill
- Consecutive errors by Harvard started the SHU comeback
- A Tischler kill and service ace, brought the Pioneers within 20-19
- After a Schoenfeld kill, a Chatterton kill and Crimson hitting error, brought the Pioneers level, 21-21
- Harvard jumped back out to a two-point edge, on a SHU hitting error and Adam Gordon kill
- Chatterton sliced the deficit in half and a McIntosh ace tied the score 23-23
- Harvard took the lead on each ensuing pair of points
- Tied at 24-24, Chatterton served long to give Harvard its second set point
- Harvard sealed the win with blocks from Ethan Smith and Campbell Schoenfeld blocks, winning 28-26
Second Set (SHU 26, Harvard 24)
- Mahony gave SHU a 9-7 lead, the largest of the set to that point for either team
- A pair of SHU errors, surrounded a Schoenfeld kill, giving the Crimson a 3-0 run
- Tischler ended the run with a kill and Butler followed, putting the Pioneers back on top
- Those points were the opening points of a 5-3 SHU run that Chatterton capped with back-to-back kills, the second hammered a ball of the Crimson block, for a 14-12 SHU advantage
- Back-to-back Pioneer attack errors was followed by a Li kill to the back line, giving the Crimson a 15-14 advantage
- Chatterton went cross court to end the Crimson run and tie the match once again, before pairing with Mahony on a block for the 16-15 advantage
- Mahony laid a ball over a Crimson blocker into the front row, tying the set, 18-18
- McCrary put the ball on the ground and that was followed by a long attack from SHU to give Harvard a 20-18 lead
- After trading blocks, Schoenfeld recorded a point, giving Harvard the 22-20 edge
- A Butler kill followed, before McIntosh hammered a ball down, tying the score, 22-22
- SHU hitting errors again gave Harvard a two-point lead, and set point, before a McIntosh kill and a Chatterton block drew SHU even, 24-24
- After a Harvard hitting error, Balaguer blocked a swing from Li, giving SHU the set win, 26-24
Third Set (Harvard 25, SHU 23)
- The Pioneers jumped out to a 5-2 lead with a McIntosh ace and kills from three different Pioneers spurring the start
- Harvard rallied with a 5-1 run of its own, capped by a Smith and Li combo block, for the 7-6 lead
- Ties followed at 7-7, 8-8, 9-9, 10-10 and 11-11
- Chatterton blocked back-to-back swings, the second with Balaguer, and then recorded a kill, to push SHU out to a 14-11 advantage
- Harvard used a 6-2 run, helped by two Li kills and capped by a Gordon kill, to retake the lead, 17-16
- An Ethan Smith service error tied the score, 17-17, before Gordan scored two straight points, with a kill and ace, to put the Crimson in front, 19-17
- His next serve was errant, but Li followed with a kill to make the lead, 20-18
- A Mahony kill and a Harvard error made the score, 20-20
- With the score tied, 21-21, for the 12th time, Balaguer and Chatterton blocked Schoenfeld to give SHU a 22-21 advantage
- The teams traded points, tying, 22-22 and 23-23, before a Chatterton service error gave Harvard set point
- Mahony's swing went long on the ensuing point, for the Crimson to earn the 25-23 win
Set Four (Harvard 25, SHU 18)
- Harvard opened the fourth set with three straight points, before Paolo Samin found a seam in the defense to put SHU on the board
- Trailing 5-2, Chatterton skied for a kill that began a 4-0 run, including a Mahony block to give the Pioneers a 6-5 advantage
- Harvard answered with a run of its own, ended with a Ctvrlik service ace, put the Crimson back on top, 10-6
- After exchanging service errors, SHU scored two of the next three points, to claw within three, 12-9
- Harvard scored three-straight, with kills from McCrary and Schoenfeld, to build a 15-9 lead
- Butler put the ball on the floor to begin a SHU stretch of four straight points, ended with a Chatterton kill that forced the Crimson to a timeout, with a 15-13 lead
- Out of the timeout, Harvard scored back-to-back points, before McIntosh slid a tip through the block to get SHU within 17-14
- Mahony's kill got SHU again within a pair, 18-16, before a kill from Schoenfeld and blocks by Gordon and Smith pushed the advantage back to four, 20-16
- Schoenfeld's kill on the next service forced a SHU timeout with the Crimson in front 21-16
- The Crimson back-to-back points out of the timeout and scored four of the last six points to seal the victory
