Women's Ice Hockey Seals Regular Season On A High Note With 4-1 Victory Over Saint Michael's

COLCHESTER, VT.- The Sacred Heart University Women's Ice Hockey team concluded the regular season on a high note this afternoon as they defeated Saint Michael's by a final score of 4-1. The Pioneers now turn their focus to the NEWHA Championship Semifinals where they await who they will face in the final four.

 

First Period 

  • Saint Michael's outshot the Pioneers in the opening period 9-8.
  • The Purple Knights were in the only team to score in the opening period as they jumped on the board early just 3:34 into the period off a goal by Krista Ferrari off a pair of assists by Jordan Monbouquette and Alissa Sullivan to put Saint Michael's ahead 1-0.
  • After the Saint Michael's goal, both sides skated to stalemate with the Purple Knights still ahead 1-0.

 

Second Period

  • The second period was all about the Pioneers as SHU outshot Saint Michael's 22-9 in the period.
  • The aggressive offensive attack paid off for SHU as senior Jayne Lewis evened the score at 1-1 off an assist by first-year Alexa Ocel to claim the top points leader in program history with 140 and as she tallied her 22nd goal of the year.
  • The lone Lewis goal was the only one of the period as the game headed into the third period with the score remaining tied up at 1-1.

 

Third Period

  • The Pioneers continued their aggressive attack as they fired off 18 shots on goal while holding Saint Michael's to just five.
  • SHU racked up three goals in the period first coming off the stick of sophomore Kennedy Spiering 10:29 into the period as she fired the puck from the blue-line into the top right corner of the net to give the Pioneers a 2-1 lead.
  • Then four minutes later 14:36 into the period, while the Pioneers were on the power-play, sophomore Kelly Solak nailed her fifth goal of the year off a pair of assists by senior Olivia Bryant and sophomore Anna Klein to push the Pioneers ahead 3-1.
  • The final nail in coffin came less than a minute later 15:14 into the period off the stick of sophomore Nicole Guidi from seniors Maddie Bishop and Victoria Grimmer to propel the Pioneers to a 4-1 victory.

 

Notes

  • SHU concludes the regular season with a 21-10 overall record and 18-2 record in NEWHA play.
  • Senior Jayne Lewis was the main spotlight as she surpassed Taylor Moreland for the all-time career points leader at SHU with 140 with her goal.
  • Sophomore goalie Frankie Sanchez ended the 2019-20 season with an impressive 19-10 overall record as she recorded 22 saves on 23 shots faced.
