SOMERSET, N.J. – Sacred Heart women's basketball first-year Sonia Smith has been announced as the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week, as announced by the league office on Wednesday afternoon. Smith earns her second NEC Rookie of the Week laurel of the 2019-20 season following a career game on Monday night at LIU.
Smith carried the scoring load for the Pioneers' injury-plagued rotation in the team's lone game of the week on Monday. The first-year guard netted 23 points in 32 minutes during a last-second setback at LIU that saw the Pioneers lose on a buzzer-beating three from the Sharks. Smith shot 57.1 percent from the field, including a perfect 4-for-4 clip from beyond the arc. She also made all three of her free throw attempts.
