FAIRFIELD, Conn.- The Sacred Heart University Women's Lacrosse team was edged by Manhattan this afternoon by a final score of 9-7. The Pioneers drop to 1-5 on the year while the Jaspers improve to 3-4. SHU returns to action on Saturday, Mar. 14 when the Pioneers travel to face UMass Lowell. Game-time is set for 1:00 p.m.

By the Numbers 

• Sophomore Lydia Werlau led the Pioneers on the offensive front with a hat-trick scoring three goals to up her season total to 12 on the year.
• Fellow sophomore Grace Reinold tallied two goals as her and Werlau tallied five of the teams seven goals.
• Midfielder Natalie Cook tallied six ground balls on the day leading the Pioneers.
• Elizabeth Small tallied a team leading four draw controls.
• First-year goalie Bella Beaton tallied eight saves on 17 shots faced for SHU in the loss.
• Three Manhattan players recorded two goals a piece in the team's victory with Grace Lipponer leading the team with three points as she tallied an assist in the game as well.

How It Happened

• SHU got on the board first with Welau finding the back of the net at 29:10 in the first half on a free position shot to put SHU ahead 1-0.
• Manhattan then scored three unanswered goals in the half with the third coming from Deb Peifer to put the Jaspers ahead 3-1.
• Before the end of the half SHU tallied two more goals first coming from Emma Kitterage on a free position shot with 3:15 left in the half to put SHU within one goal.
• Then in the closing seconds Werlau netted her second of the game with 0:26 remaining in the half to even the score up at 3-3 heading into the second half.
• The Jaspers started the second half with a goal off the stick of Peifer to give Manhattan a 4-3 edge.
• SHU answered less than a minute later with 25:55 remaining in the half off a goal by Grace Reinold on a free position shot to even the score back up at 4-4.
• A pair of back and forth goals by Manhattan and SHU with the Jaspers scoring first with 24:55 remaining from Grace Lipponer then a goal by Cassie Cessario with 24:43 remaining evened the score back up to 5-5.
• Then Manhattan turned on the jets as the Jaspers netted four unanswered goals with the last coming from Meghan Rodino with 9:26 remaining to put the Jaspers ahead 9-5.
• SHU tallied two more goals first from Werlau with 8:36 remaining followed by a last second goal by Reinold with :06 remaining would result in the final score being 9-7.
