Comeback Falls Short 24-16 for SHU Wrestling Versus LIU

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Facing a 15-point deficit, the Sacred Heart University wrestling team nearly pulled off the comeback Wednesday against LIU. Unfortunately, the Shark prevailed in the final match to take the victory, 24-16.
The loss dropped the Pioneers to 0-2 while the Sharks improved to 1-1.
Sacred Heart started the match with back-to-back 6-1 victories by Joe Accousti at 184 pounds and 197-pounder Robert Hetherman thanks to riding time. The Sharks returned the favor with two decisions of their own to tie the match at 6-6.
The Sharks won their fourth match in a row when Devin Matthews topped Kyle Randal, 3-2, then Drew Witham pinned Ryan Burns in 53 seconds. Halting LIU's run was Nick Palumbo with a 16-3 major decision against Kenny Cooper at 157 pounds.
Giving the Pioneers a shot at the team victory was Will Schmidt at 165 pounds as he pinned Ryan Ferro with one second left in the first period. In the final bout at 174 pounds, Scott Jarosz had the advantage going into the third period, but James Langham rallied to win 6-5 and seal the team triumph.
The Pioneers are back at home Sunday to face Bucknell at 2 p.m.
