Pioneers coming off 20-10 Win over Merrimack
SOMERSET, NJ – The Sacred Heart University football team was in control of Saturday's game against Merrimack on both sides of the ball. Fittingly, the Pioneers got a pair of Northeast Conference honors as Chris Outterbridge was named Defensive Player of the Week and Malik Grant earned Offensive Player of the Week as announced by the league office.
For Grant it's his second award of the season after a September 20 honor. Outterbridge received the first NEC weekly accolade of his career. Grant shared the award with Duquesne's Darius Perrantes. Josh McGrigg from Saint Francis was named Special Teams Player of the Week and Bryant's Zevi Eckhaus picked up Rookie of the Week.
This is the second honor in as many days for Grant. He earned the New England Football Writers Association's Golden Helmet Award on Sunday and was an honorable mention for the Stats Perform FCS National Player of the Week.
In the 20-10 win over the Warriors during Homecoming, Grant rushed for a career-high 268 yards on 27 carries. It's the fourth-highest total in school history and the second-most in FCS this year. That performance vaulted the Bronx, NY native up the national rankings to number two with 710 rushing yards and third at 118.4 yards per game.
Outterbridge had one of the best days of his career against the Warriors. He posted seven tackles, including a career-high 4.5 for a loss. That performance jumped him up to fourth in the NEC with 5.0 tackles for a loss.
Sacred Heart continues its home stand against Central Connecticut State Saturday at 1 p.m.
