After not playing last season, the Sacred Heart University football team resumes its in-state rivalry with Central Connecticut State. The Pioneers (3-3 overall, 1-1 NEC) snapped a two-game losing streak last Saturday by beating Merrimack, 20-10. The Blue Devils (1-4, 1-0 NEC) have dropped their last three games, all out of conference, including a 22-20 loss to Columbia.
OPENING KICKOFF
- Going after its second-straight victory, Sacred Heart hosts in-state foe Central Connecticut State at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
- The Pioneers remained undefeated at home by beating Merrimack, 20-10, while the Blue Devils fell 22-20 to Columbia
- Sacred Heart and Central Connecticut State have won outright or shared the last four NEC titles.
- Running back Malik Grant was named the NEC Offensive Player of the Week and earned the NEFWA's Golden Helmet. Grant is second in the nation with 710 total and third with an average of 118.3 yards per game.
- The Pioneer defense is allowing 5.6 points per game at home, but surrendering 26.7 ppg. on the road.
- Senior linebacker Chris Outterbridge picked up his first NEC Defensive Player of the Week honor after seven tackles, including 4.5 for a loss.
- SHU will wear pink socks and wristbands during Saturday's game to honor breast cancer survivors as part of the team's Cancer Awareness game.
