POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — Winning almost 50 percent of its bouts, the Sacred Heart University men's fencing team finished strong at the Vassar College Invitational with a 7-1 record on Sunday. In the Red & White's first team-scored meet of the season, they went undefeated against seven non-conference opponents with the lone loss against Northeast Fencing Conference rival Drew.
Through the eight rounds, the foil squad trampled over its competition as Lawrence Tan went 19-3. In conjunction, Jacob Bartel earned a 16-7 record for his first outing as a Pioneer and Tomas Koeck finished with a 17-5 record.
Graduate student Cameron Silver led the epee bunch and posted a 14-5 bout record. First-year Connor Kravit aided in the success and went 14-7.
SHU shutout Army West Point and Hunter in the third and fifth round on the backs of Bartel, Koeck and Tan.
The second goose egg was delivered by the epee squad came in round three as led the charge Frank Riccio with three bout wins, followed by Silver and Kravit with two. Jeffrey Palma and Luke Fenwick each had a hand in the shutout with one win each.
The team competes in its first NCF meet against MIT on November 20.
