SOMERSET, N.J.- For the second straight year, the Sacred Heart University softball team was projected to finish third at the conclusion of the 2021 season when the Northeast Conference released its Preseason Poll Thursday afternoon. The league's head coaches ranked the teams one through eight and were prohibited from voting for their own programs.
Last year, the Pioneers season was cut short cut due to COVID-19 as the Pioneers concluded the 2020 season with an 8-8 overall record.
LIU claimed the top spot in the poll with seven first-place votes as they took second place in the tournament last year. Following right behind in second is the reigning champion Saint Francis U who took one first-place vote followed by SHU with one first-place vote. Mount Saint Mary's, Bryant, Central Connecticut State take up the four to six slots while Fairleigh Dickinson, Wagner, and Merrimack round out the rest of the poll.
The 2021 season begins in nine days as the Pioneers open up the 2021 season at home as the Pioneers host Rhode Island for a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 a.m.
