FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Sacred Heart University men's basketball head coach Anthony Latina rounds out the incoming class with the addition of two new faces. Junior guard Joey Reilly and freshman forward Tanner Thomas are set to join the Pioneer roster for the 2021-22 season.
"We are extremely excited about adding Joey and Tanner as well as our entire incoming recruiting class," said Latina. "As I have previously stated, they all bring unique abilities that complement one another. They are hardworking, high-character student-athletes that prioritize being both the best students and athletes they can be. They will represent us in a first-class manner and further strengthen the culture of our program and institution! We feel that these young men will thrive both on and off the court at Sacred Heart University!"
Reilly transfers to Sacred Heart from Holy Cross where he spent the last two seasons. While with the Crusaders, the 6-foot guard saw time in 20 games across two seasons averaging nine minutes a night. Prior to Holy Cross, the Cromwell, Conn. native played high school basketball at East Catholic in Manchester where he was a two-time Connecticut High School Coaches Association First Team All-State selection as he finished his career as the school's all-time leading scorer with 1,828 points. In 2019, the Hartford Courant and USA Today named Reilly the Connecticut Player of the Year. Reilly led the high school squad to a pair of state championships in 2019 (Division I) and 2016 (Class L), as well as three Central Connecticut Conference titles for an overall four-year record of 104-7.
"Joey is an experienced point guard that can also play off the ball because of his ability to shoot with range for a high percentage," Latina added. He has an excellent understanding and feel for the game and will bring a solid veteran presence to our program."
6-foot-6 forward Thomas joins his brother Tyler Thomas in the Red and White. A four-year varsity letter winner at Williston Northampton School, Thomas was named team MVP and earned NEPSAC A Honorable Mention as a senior. Thomas was the team's leading scorer averaging 18 points and seven rebounds.
"Tanner is a versatile forward that plays with great energy and effort. He has a developing skill set that can impact the game in many ways," noted Latina.
The two additions enter the program alongside freshmen Najee Coursey, Raymond Espinal-Guzman, and Dominic Mello.
