Pioneers fall Gaels and Wagner.
NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Sacred Heart University women's swimming diving team turned in a number of strong performances Saturday but couldn't come through with a team victory. The Pioneers fell to host Iona, 155-82, and 142-99 in a Northeast Conference match up with Wagner.
Sacred Heart started the day by sweeping the diving competition. Sophomore Lola Barrett just missed her personal-best with a winning tally of 212.00 on the one-meter board. Her career-best score of 217.45 was second to only teammate Olivia McNicholas who posted a winning tally of 230.05 in the three-meter competition.
Turning in a pair of top three finishes in the distance events was rookie Charlotte Kaduson. The first year student opened with a time of 10:51.70 in the 1,000 free then touched the wall at 5:23.34 in the 500 free.
The 200 butterfly saw two Pioneers in the top five. Sophomore Melanie Sanchez was just out-touched at the wall with a second-place time of 2:13.64. Classmate Emma Chambers was two spots back at 2:16.24.
Also turning in two quality swims in the sprints was senior Kelly Bartnett. She was fourth in the 50 free after a time of 25.28 then touched in at 55.22 for a fifth-place finish in the 100 free.
Fellow senior Casey Barrett hit the wall in 2:16.99 to take fifth in the 200 individual medley. Also posting a top-five time was Meghan Hammarlund in the 200 backstroke at 2:14.90.
The Pioneers (0-2 overall, 0-1 NEC) return to competition October 29 when they travel to Stony Brook.
