SOMERSET, NJ – More accolades are coming in for Sacred Heart University graduate quarterback Marquez McCray after his career day in the 40-27 win over Stonehill. On Monday, he was recognized by the Northeast Conference with Offensive Football Player of the Week.
It's the second weekly honor from the conference for the Philadelphia native, but his first in nearly four years. McCray was named NEC Rookie of the Week on November 11, 2019. He shares the award with Merrimack's Victor Dawson. Saint Francis picked up Defensive Player of the Week (Donnell Brown) and Special Teams Player of the Week (Alex Schmoke). Stonehill's Ashur Carraha was named Rookie of the Week.
Against the Skyhawks, McCray had his best game as a Pio as he threw for a career-high 405 yards, the 11th-best performance in the FCS this year. His total is third on the SHU single-game charts and the most by a Pioneer since 2019. McCray was 21-of-30 (70 percent) to up his competition percentage to 65.6 percent for the year, ranking him 23rd in the country.
McCray led Sacred Heart to scores in four of its first six possessions to start the game and established a lead the Pioneers would not relinquish. He helped the Pioneers answer Stonehill's first two touchdowns in the second half, including a 75-yard touchdown pass to LJ Haskett, the longest pass of his career. McCray also ran for a score.
The Pioneers (4-2 overall, 2-0 NEC) are on the road Saturday to face Merrimack at 1 p.m.
