BROOKVILLE, NY – The Sacred Heart University men's wrestling team made a late push but couldn't pull off the comeback Saturday at LIU. The Pioneers fell to the Sharks, 26-15.
The loss dropped the Pioneers to 1-8 overall, 0-6 in the EIVA. LIU improved to 1-13, 1-7 in the league.
Joe Accousti gave Sacred Heart an early lead with a 5-1 decision at 184 pounds against James Langan. The Sharks claimed the next three matches before Anthony Petrillo produced a 7-2 decision versus Kaelan Francois at 133 pounds.
Two more wins by LIU built a 20-6 advantage for the hosts. At 157 pounds, Nick Palumbo was a 6-3 winner over Rhise Royster. Ryan Bollentino gave the Pioneers a chance to win the team match when he pinned Blake Bahna in their 165-pound bout in 2:55 to cut the margin to 20-15. Unfortunately, LIU won the final match to secure the victory.
The Pioneers are on the road Sunday to face Brown at 1 p.m.
