SOMERSET, N.J. - The Northeast Conference announced that the Sacred Heart University men's soccer, swimming and diving, softball and women's tennis teams all received the conference's Team Sportsmanship Award this week.
Instituted by league Presidents in 2008, the awards are designed to acknowledge the team in each conference sport that, in the opinion of its peers, most closely demonstrates good sportsmanship based on the NEC Principles of Sportsmanship and Standards of Conduct. Voting is conducted at the conclusion of each season by each team and head coach, who rank teams within the conference based on a set of criteria.
The women's tennis program earned its third-straight sportsmanship nod after a record-breaking 12-wing season. The Pioneers posted a 12-13 overall record and 5-2 in the NEC to finish third. A record number five members of the team received All-NEC Honors.
For the fourth time in program history, the softball program took home the sportsmanship award. The Pioneers closed out the season with four on the All-NEC list, including Grace Saad who earned Most Improved Player.
Capping off a season that saw head diving coach Adam Vance earn NEC Diving Coach of the Year, the swimming and diving program earned its first sportsmanship honor since the award was put in place in 2008. The Pioneers finished fourth at the conference championship and captured four medals.
Men's soccer grabbed its first sportsmanship award in program history. The team narrowly missed the NEC Tournament this fall and placed two Pioneers on the All-NEC list.
Since the NEC Team Sportsmanship program was instituted in 2008-09, Saint Francis U leads the conference with 41 awards, followed by Sacred Heart (34), Wagner (32), CCSU (27) and Bryant (25) to round out the top-five.
