Ciszek & Smallcomb Pick Up NEC Weekly Honors

Sacred Heart open conference play with sweep.
SOMERSET, N.J. – Over the weekend, the Sacred Heart University women's volleyball team rolled to a pair of victories to start the Northeast Conference schedule. On Tuesday the Pioneers collected a pair of conference awards as Sarah Ciszek was named Northeast Conference/Molten Player of the Week and Emma Smallcomb picked up Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league office.
Ciszek, a native of San Juan Capistrano, Calif., has dominated the Player of the Week award as she has claimed all five this year to up her career total to 19. For the Westborough, Mass. native Smallcomb, it's her second award in three weeks and the third of her career. Weronika Poczynek of CCSU was named Rookie of the Week.
In wins over LIU and St. Francis Brookyn, Ciszek dished out 80 assists, averaging 11.40 per set. She also contributed to the Pioneers' attack during that stretch, hitting .405 with 19 total kills (2.71 per set). For the second time this season, she delivered 50 assists while adding nine kills in a four-set win against the Sharks. She was just as impressive the next day in a sweep of St. Francis Brooklyn, tallying a double-double on 30 assists and 10 kills while compiling a season-high .643 hitting percentage. Ciszek continues to lead the circuit in several categories, including hitting percentage (.353), kills (119), assists (514) and assists per set (9.18).
Smallcomb averaged 5.71 digs per set to pace the defense. The graduate libero tallied a season-high 25 digs in a four-set victory against the Sharks before she recorded 15 against the Terriers. Smallcomb is third in the conference at 4.54 digs per set.
The Pioneers will take on Poczynek and Blue Devils on Friday before hosting Hartford on Sunday.
