
Football Closes Out Season with Road Loss to UCONN

The Pioneers wrap up 2023 with an overall record of 2-9
EAST HARTFORD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart football team closed out the 2023 regular season on Saturday afternoon at Rentschler Field as the Pioneers dropped a 31-3 decision to the UCONN Huskies. The Pioneers conclude the 2023 season with an overall record of 2-9 and a 2-5 mark in Northeast Conference (NEC) action. With the win, the Huskies ended a four-game losing streak and 2-9 on the season.

The Huskies got off to a quick start scoring points on their first three possessions of the game. The hosts first score of the game came on a 50-yard field goal from Joe McFadden, before Ta'Quan Roberson found the hands of Cameron Ross for the 46-yard touchdown. An extra point attempt from Joe McFadden put the hosts up double-digits, 10-0, with 5:45 left in the first.
After forcing the Pioneers to punt on a fourth and eight, UCONN came right back down the field and scored following a 12-yard touchdown pass from Roberson to Justin Joly.
Sacred Heart's lone points came with 2:02 left in the second quarter as quarterback Rob McCoy put together a 12 play, 68-yard drive that culminated in a Sam Renzi 24-yard field goal.
However, UCONN would strike once more before the end of the quarter as Roberson connected with Kylish Hicks from 14-yards out with 17 seconds on the clock. From there, McFadden would go on to tally the extra point attempt and extend the hosts' lead to 24-3 heading into halftime.
UCONN capped the scoring in the fourth quarter as Roberson threw his fourth touchdown of the day to Brett Buckman to bring the final score to 31-3.
