Velleco Cracks SHU Record Book in Day 1 of Gompei Invitational

SHU had eleven top ten finishes
WORCESTER, Mass. – The Sacred Heart University women's swim team saw success on day one of three at the Gompei Invitational hosted by WPI on Friday. Sophia Velleco cracked the SHU record book and now sits third in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:03.94.
The Pioneers took to the pool for the 200-yard medley relay, 200-yard IM, 50-yard freestyle, 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke, 100-yard butterfly, and 800-yard freestyle relay. The meet included three sessions – prelims, diving, and finals. There were A, B, C, and D finals – each with 10 lanes.
Emma Chambers finished eighth in the 200-yard IM after improving her time from prelims with a time of 2:12.24.
First-year Emma Haas paced the Pioneers in the 50-yard freestyle, placing third with a time of 24.17, also improving from the morning session.
The Pioneers had an outstanding showing in the 200-yard breaststroke. Junior Rosemery Nieto finished fourth with a time of 2:24.99. Finishing sixth, was Ella Krikorian with a time of 2:28.22. Junior Olivia Velleco swam a time of 2:31.43 and finished seventh.
SHU showed its depth again in the 100-yard butterfly. Haas led the way for the Pioneers, finishing fifth with a time of 58.14. Following Haas, was first-year Abby Hernandez, finishing eighth with a time of 58.67. Finishing ninth, was junior Melanie Sanchez with a time of 58.91.
In synchronized diving, Olivia McNicholas and Lola Barrett came in second place, while Natalie Carbone and Christianna Tzepos placed fourth.
In the 200-yard medley relay, the relay of Sophia Velleco, Nieto, Hernandez, and Haas finished third with a time of 1:47.40. Finishing the night, the relay of Ella Krikorian, Maeve English, Kate Bell, and Sophia Velleco finished fourth in the 800-yard freestyle with a time of 7:55.74.
