Pioneers Take Home Four Gold in Day 2 of WPI Invite

Sophia Velleco and Ella Krikorian crack the SHU All-Time Top 5
WORCESTER, Mass. – The Sacred Heart University women's swim team's hot streak continued on day two of the Gompei Invitational Saturday. Sophia Velleco, Rosemery Nieto, and Olivia McNicholas earned first-place finishes.
The Pioneers took to the pool for the 200-yard freestyle relay, 400-yard IM, 100-yard backstroke, 50-yard freestyle, 50-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 50-yard backstroke, 100-yard breaststroke, and the 400-yard medley relay. The meet included three sessions – prelims, diving, and finals. There were A, B, C, and D finals – each with 10 lanes.
To start the night, Sophia Velleco, Ella Krikorian, Emma Davis, and Emma Haas took home the bronze in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:38.23.
After a battle in the 400-yard IM, Emma Chambers finished second with a time of 4:35.30. Melanie Sanchez finished fifth with a time of 4:38.32, and Daniella Palamaro finished eighth with a time of 4:42.19. All three Pioneers improved their times by over a second from prelims.
Kristen Baker paced the Pioneers in the 100-yard backstroke placing seventh with a time of 59.12, also improving from the morning session.
Haas led the Pioneers in the non-traditional 50-yard butterfly with a time of 25.68 and finished second. Abby Hernandez finished ninth with the same time she swam in the morning at 26.81.
Sophia Velleco continued to see success as she placed first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:52.93. This time has earned her fourth all-time at SHU in the event and is her second time breaking SHU's all-time top five this weekend.
Rosemery Nieto continued to have an excellent weekend in the pool taking gold in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:04.88, just a tenth of a second off of her school record. Improving her time from the morning, Ella Krikorian finished eighth with a time of 1:07.70. Krikorian's time earned her the fifth spot all-time at SHU.
Olivia McNicholas finished first in the one-meter diving with a score of 428.85. Lola Barrett finished fifth (375.25), and Natalie Carbone finished sixth (367.45).
Ending on a high note, in the 400-yard medley relay, Sophia Velleco, Nieto, Hernandez, and Haas took home the gold with a time of 3:54.33. SHU's B-relay including Kristen Baker, Ella Krikorian, Sanchez, and Emma Davis took sixth with a time of 4:00.70.
