Pioneers open the season on Friday, Feb. 16, at the UNCG Tournament
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Sacred Heart University softball head coach Pam London, in her 36th year as a part of the coaching staff, announced the team's schedule for the upcoming 2024 season this afternoon.
"We are anxious to get our 2024 season started," said coach London. "Our athletes have worked extremely hard in the fall semester to be ready to take on our challenging schedule. In our opening trips down south, we will be facing some great competition. Between our two trips to North Carolina and Florida, we will play 17 games and we are confident that these games will prepare us to begin our league play and compete against all our northern opponents when we return. We have a solid group of leaders on this team, and they know how to handle the grind of the Spring season!"
The Pioneers are slated to play 56 contests this season, 22 at home at Pioneer Park and 34 on the road or at a neutral site. SHU will also play a 24-game Northeast Conference (NEC) slate with the addition of Le Moyne to the league in the offseason.
Sacred Heart's campaign will kick off at UNC Greensboro on Friday, Feb. 16, as SHU will take part in a tournament at the Spartans' Softball Stadium in Greensboro, N.C. The Pios will battle the hosts, Ohio and Drexel, in their time at the event.
After returning from North Carolina, the Pioneers will welcome Fordham for their 2024 home opener on Saturday, Feb. 24. Pios and Rams are slated to play a doubleheader at Pioneer Park, with the first game beginning at noon.
After Fordham, Sacred Heart will migrate south again to participate in the Spring Games tournament and play a pair of one-offs at Florida Gulf Coast. SHU will take part in 12 games over its 10-day stay in Florida, starting with a March 1 bout against St. Bonaventure.
Once back in the Nutmeg State, the Pioneers kick off NEC play on Saturday, Mar. 16, with a home series against Wagner. The series begins with a Saturday doubleheader and will culminate with a single game on Sunday.
The Pios continue league play with back-to-back road series against FDU (March 23-24) and regular-season NEC champs Saint Francis (March 29-30). SHU starts April by hosting Central Connecticut State (Apr. 2-3). The Pioneers close out the league slate at NEC champions LIU (Apr. 20-21) before welcoming newcomer Le Moyne (Apr. 27-28).
SHU's non-conference slate is highlighted by games against in-state foes. The Pioneers will play Fairfield (Mar. 20 & May 1), Yale (Mar. 27) and Quinnipiac (Apr. 17). Sacred Heart will also host Siena for a doubleheader on March 21.
