Pioneers Top Bearcats in Day Two Split at Furman Invitational

Kowalski won her second collegiate game, while Saad and Mowad both homered
GREENVILLE, S.C. – First year pitcher Sam Kowalski pitched a gem against Binghamton University this afternoon to earn the Sacred Heart University softball team a split on day two of the Furman Invitational. The Pioneers defeated the Bearcats 2-0 in the opener, and fell in game one to Bellarmine University, 13-2.

The Pioneers opened the bottom of the first with a bang as Grace Saad slammed a solo homer on a full count, her first of the season and the ninth of her career, to give SHU a 1-0 lead.
Bellarmine erased the Pios' advantage by scoring two runs in the top of the third inning to go ahead 2-1.
However, Sacred Heart did not trail for long, evening the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the third. The Pios opened the inning with two walks before a wild pitch allowed Cayla Nista to score from third.
Unfortunately for SHU, it did not find the scoreboard again for the remainder of the game. On the other hand, the Knights scored the next 11 runs to secure a 13-2 victory.

The Pioneers drew first blood in the second game today as Jenna Mowad's home run in the fourth gave SHU its first hit and a 1-0 advantage. Today's dinger is the third in Mowad's three-year career.
Defensively, Kowalski continued to shine in the circle at the start of her collegiate career. The San Clemente, Calif., native only needed one run of insurance as she earned a complete-game win behind 7.0 innings of scoreless ball. She also finished with five strikeouts while allowing just four hits.
Mowad continued her strong day by giving the Pioneers a 2-0 lead in the top of the seventh. Following a double and a single, the junior infielder scored after a Binghamton passed ball.
A 2-0 advantage was more than enough for Kowalski, who secured her second win of the season with a clean bottom of the seventh.
