Pioneers Drop Furman Invitational Finale to Tigers

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Sacred Heart University softball team outhit the Tigers of Towson University on Sunday morning but fell by a 9-6 final score to bring an end to its trip to the Furman Invitational in Greenville, S.C.

Towson opened the game by scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning to storm ahead 3-0.
The Pios' offense came alive in the top of the fourth. Jenna Mowad started the SHU rally with an RBI fly-out to center with the bases loaded. Then, Amy Petrovich stepped to the plate next and singled up the middle to bring Victoria LoPinto home. A Towson error in the next at-bat allowed Grace Saad to score and Emily Carroll to reach.
Sacred Heart's big fourth inning was highlighted by a bases-clearing, three-RBI double from Nicole Henke that gave SHU a 6-3 advantage. With two outs, Henke calmly stepped to the plate and smacked a double to left-center to plate Cayla Nista, Carroll, and Petrovich.
Unfortunately for the Pios, the Tigers were up for the challenge, matching Sacred Heart's six runs to retake the lead, 9-6.
Following the fourth, neither team found the scoreboard for the remainder of the day, as the Tigers held on to secure a 9-6 victory.
UP NEXT
The Pioneers will have off until Friday, March 3, when they begin the Runnin' Bulldog Classic, hosted by Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, N.C. SHU begins the tournament on Friday at 11 a.m. against the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
