
Nieto Breaks 200 Breaststroke School Record on Final Day of NECs

Vance was named Diving Coach of the Year for the second straight season
GENEVA, Ohio – Sophomore Rosemery Nieto set a new school record in the 200 breaststroke to highlight the Sacred Heart University women's swimming and diving team's final day at the 2023 Northeast Conference Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday. The Pios also saw Head Diving Coach Adam Vance win his second consecutive NEC Diving Coach of the Year honor after leading SHU to a first and a third in the two diving events.
As a team, the Pioneers concluded the NEC Championships in sixth place with 377 points. Central Connecticut State University claimed the top prize with 659.5 points.

PRELIMS
- The Pios sent two swimmers to championship finals on Saturday evening, as Kelly Bartnett made the 100 freestyle and Nieto made the 200 breaststroke finals.
- Bartnett placed fifth in the 100 freestyle prelim with a time of 51.95, while Nieto swam a 2:22.66 in the 200 breaststroke,
- The duo of Casey Barrett and Meghan Hammarlund are set to score in the 200 backstroke consolation final.
- Barrett took 12th in the prelim with a time of 2:08.36, ahead of Hammarlund (2:09.45) in 15th.
- The Pioneers also tallied a pair of C finalists in three different races.
- Emma Davis (53.50) and Grace Bergstrom (54.06) made the 100 free C final, Alivia Gibson (2:11.19), Daniella Palamaro (2:12.55), and Leila Sofiane (2:11.54) made the 200 back, and Ella Krikorian (2:28.07) and Olivia Velleco (2:30.24) made the 200 breaststroke.
FINALS
- The Pios started the evening session with a bang, as first year Charlotte Kaduson posted the second-quickest 1,650 freestyle time in school history, finishing fifth in the event.
- Bartnett then tallied the team's best showing of the night, placing fourth in the 100 freestyle with a time of 51.21, just .04 seconds off the pace for a spot on the podium.
- Nieto followed Bartnett's performance by breaking the school record in the 200 breaststroke, clocking a time of 2:21.58 to break the record she owned in the event.
- The Pioneers tallied two more scoring swimmers in the 1,650, as Olivia Ronaghan (18:11.97) placed 14th and Kelly Peter (18:15.43) took 16th.
- Hammarlund (2:09.44) and Barrett (2:12.00) finished back-to-back in the consolation final of the 200 backstroke, placing 15th and 16th, respectively.
- The 400 freestyle relay team of Bartnett, Bergstrom, Barrett, and Davis placed sixth with a mark of 3:31.63.
- In the 100 freestyle C final, Davis (53.50) placed 19th, and Bergstrom (54.06) finished 22nd.
- The Pios tallied three swimmers in the C final of the 200 backstroke, as Palamaro (2:12.70), Gibson (2:09.84), and Sofiane (2:11.54) all competed.
- Both Krikorian (2:27.22) and Velleco (2:28.81) placed in the top 20 of the C final of the 200 breaststroke, finishing 19th and 20th, respectively.
