Pios Compete on Day One of New Captains Classic

Croce led SHU with a win in the hammer throw

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Cameron Croce picked up a victory in the hammer throw to lead the Sacred Heart University men's track and field team on day one of the New Captains Classic, hosted by Christopher Newport. 

Cameron Croce earned the victory in the hammer throw with a toss of 54.20m. Daniel Blatman gave the Pios two of the top three finishers in third with a toss of 43.51m. Cole Decusati (35.59m) and Liam Tharin (33.68m) finished in the ninth and 10th place, respectively. 

Tharin then placed fifth in the javelin with a throw of 39.20m. Albert DePierro IV finished right behind Tharin in sixth with a throw of 39.07m. 

Benjamin Healy tallied two wins, one second, and two thirds in the men's decathlon. The senior won the 100m (11.32) and long jump (6.16m), both personal records. Edward Kaufman finished ahead of Healy in the shot put with a throw of 9.88m to take second. Douglas Suter's highest finish in the decathlon was in the long jump after he posted a mark of 5.44m. 

Day two of the New Captains Classic is set for tomorrow morning in Newport News, Va.
