Pios Finish New Captains Classic with Three Victories

Croce won the shot put and hammer, while Nassaney took the high jump

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Sacred Heart University men's track and field team tallied three wins at the New Captains Classic, hosted by Christopher Newport, which wrapped up on Saturday afternoon. 

Owen Nassaney claimed a victory in the high jump after clearing 1.95m on his first attempt. The senior also took fourth in the long jump after posting a mark of 6.15m. Blake Stewart (5.44m) finished 10th in the long jump.

Cameron Croce joined Nassaney at the top of the podium after winning the shot put with a throw of 13.67m, his second win of the weekend. Aidan Glennon (12.15m) and Daniel Blatman (11.48m) took seventh and eighth in the event, respectively. 

Croce capped his impressive weekend with a second-place showing in the discus after logging a personal-record mark of 43.57m. Liam Tharin (35.82m) placed seventh in the discus, one spot ahead of teammate Glennon in eighth after his PR throw of 35.78m. 

Trevor Middleton led a five-person contingent of Pios in the 3,000 meters by finishing second. Middleton clocked a time of 9:04.89 to edge Matthew Vene (9:09.30) in third. Ryan Scappaticci (9:16.14), Andrew Bacile (9:47.39), and Christian Selverian (10:07.57) finished in fourth, fifth, and sixth.  

Rafael Mahario and Jonathan Mahon placed second and third in the 400m dash. Mahario ran the event in 50.54, while Mahon went 50.72. Ryan Jaipaul placed eight in the 400 with a time of 54.40. 

Jordan Leon, Charles Catching, and Owen Delisle all finished in the top six of the 800 meters. Leon took second place with a time of 2:02.62, while Catching (2:07.05) and Delisle (2:10.79) set new personal records. 

Patrick Curreri finished fifth in the 1,500 meters after posting a time of 4:21.48.

The Pios that competed in the decathlon wrapped up the event today. Benjamin Healy finished second in the event with 5,539 points. Healy set new PRs in the 100m, discus, and javelin. Douglas Suter placed fourth with a PR of 4,609 points. He also set new personal records in the 100, 400, discus, javelin, and 1,500. Finally, Edward Kaufman took fifth with 4,171 and set new PRs in all but one event. 

SHU finished fourth in both the 4x400m and 4x100m relay races. Jack Sarkisian, Jaipaul, Catching, and Delisle posted a time of 3:44.33 in the 4x400m. Roberto DaCosta, Mahon, Mahario, and Corry Brinken ran the 4x100m in 43.23. 

The SHU outdoor season will continue at the Merrimack College Alumni Classic on Saturday, Apr. 15.
