El Chaib, Lim, Petrovich, and Starastsenka all won scholar-athlete awards

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Northeast Conference released the 2023 NEC Spring Scholar-Athletes, Academic Honor Roll, and Commissioner's Honor Roll on Thursday afternoon, with Sacred Heart University well represented on all three lists.

The Pioneers racked up a league-high four scholar-athlete award-winners, as Chantal El Chaib (women's golf), Marcus Lim (men's golf), Amy Petrovich (softball), and Katsiaryna Starastsenka (women's tennis) all took home this honor. In addition, 247 Pioneers made the Academic Honor Roll, and 110 SHU student-athletes were named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll.

El Chaib capped her impressive junior season with today's honor. The Abu Dhabi, UAE, native helped guide the Pioneers to their second straight NEC Championship before being named the NEC Golfer of the Year. She carded a 1-under 215 at the challenging LPGA International to claim medalist honors at the NEC Championship. El Chaib won a team-best five events this season and maintained a 74.0 average over 30.5 rounds. The Strategic Communication, PR, and Advertising major holds a 3.87 grade-point average.

Lim tallied a historic season for Sacred Heart men's golf in 2023, as he became the first golfer in NEC history to earn All-America status from Ping. In addition to being named an All-American, the two-time NEC Golfer of the Year was tabbed to the Ping Division I All-Northeast Region Team and named Academic All-District by the College Sports Communicators (CSC). Lim won three events and finished among the top 10 nine times, with a 70.4 average over 28 combined rounds in the fall and spring. The junior from Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia, maintains a 3.73 GPA as a Health Science major with a focus on Healthcare Administration.

Petrovich has racked up an impressive amount of accomplishments following her final season donning the red and white. The East Hanover, N.J., native was named Third Team All-Region by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA), earned her fourth career All-NEC nod as a First Teamer, and was tabbed CSC Academic All-District. She started 45 games this year and tallied career highs in batting average (.336), slugging percentage (.507), on-base percentage (.419), runs (29), and triples (2). Petrovich held a 3.94 GPA while pursuing a graduate degree in Digital Marketing.

After posting an outstanding junior campaign, Starastsenka rounds out SHU's spring scholar-athlete award-winners. The Mogilev, Belarus, native collected her third career All-NEC First Team nod after ranking second in the conference with 19 singles wins. She finished the year with a 17-5 record at No. 1 singles and registered a 7-1 mark within the league. In addition to her singles success, Starastsenka was named Second Team All-NEC in doubles with teammate Olivia Kharkover. She also earned a spot on the CSC Academic All-District At-Large Team. The Finance major holds a 4.0 GPA.
