SHU will open the season at home on November 6th
FAIRFIELD, Conn.—The Sacred Heart University men's basketball team has released its non-conference schedule for the 2023-24 season. The Pioneers have built a schedule of quality opponents to prepare the team for Northeast Conference (NEC) play.
Sacred Heart will open the season at home for the first time since the 2015-16 season. SHU will host Sarah Lawrence on Monday, November 6, to kick off head coach Anthony Latina's 11th season at the helm.
The Pios will be on the road for four straight games, with stops at Iona and Holy Cross, before traveling to UMBC for an MTE. SHU will take on the hosts and will close out the tournament against Loyola (Md.).
"We feel like we have once again put together an extremely competitive non-conference schedule," said Latina. "We are playing teams from a variety of rival leagues, such as the Ivy, Patriot, America East, and MAAC. We have also further challenged ourselves by scheduling teams from the Big East and the Atlantic 10. We are very excited to continue some regional rivalries against Fairfield and Holy Cross, as well as reestablish games against former opponents like St. John's, Providence, and Iona. In addition, we will be starting a series for the first time in school history against Boston University."
Sacred Heart will return home right before Thanksgiving to host Binghamton on November 21, before jumping on the road again to take on Saint Joseph's on Sunday, November 26.
The Pioneers will be home for two consecutive games as they host the University of New Hampshire on Thursday, November 30, and will take on Boston University for the first time in program history on Saturday, December 2.
On Wednesday, December 6, Sacred Heart will take on its first Big East opponent of the season at St. John's for the team's third overall meeting.
SHU will host Fairfield in a crosstown rivalry game on Saturday, December 9, in the Pitt Center. The Pioneers will get back on the road for two straight, starting with another Big East opponent, Providence College, on December 16, and will then travel to Albany on December 19.
Sacred Heart will close out its non-conference schedule with two home games starting with Dartmouth on Tuesday, December 21, followed by Mercy College on December 30 to wrap up the 2023 portion of the schedule.
"We believe this schedule will prepare us well for conference play and put us in the best position to compete for a championship," said Latina.
The NEC schedule will be announced at a later date.
