SHU Athletics Director Representing FCS
FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Judy Ann Riccio, Sacred Heart's Director of Athletics, has been appointed to the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Oversight Committee.
Riccio, in her third year leading SHU Athletics, will serve on the committee through June of 2026.
The Football Oversight Committee (FOC) ensures appropriate oversight of the game for the Football Championship Subdivision while enhancing the development of the sport. It makes recommendations related to regular-season and postseason football. The committee prioritizes enhancement of the student-athlete educational experience (academically and athletically), and in doing so, promotes student-athletes' personal growth and leadership development. It works in conjunction with appropriate governance entities to provide solutions to issues impacting the health and safety of football student-athletes.
"It's an honor to have a part in the process of enhancing the experience of these student-athletes playing a sport so feverishly followed," said Riccio, whose football program has won three of the last five conference titles and owns six overall NEC crowns. "I look forward to working with and learning from administrators across the country on this committee."
Riccio, the first female athletics director to lead SHU, is truly a Pioneer as one of the few women Division I athletic directors at schools with football programs. Now she is on the first FCS Oversight Committee; the FBS and FCS worked together until they split into separate groups this year.
SHU Athletics has had many highlights under its progressive leader. Most recently, the 2022-23 SHU women's basketball team became the first Northeast Conference squad to win an NCAA Tournament game, while the Pios won two 2022-23 NEC Cups for overall supremacy in conference competition as well as for academic success.
