Fairfield, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University Department of Athletics held its annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day clinic in conjunction with the Pioneers women's basketball game against Mount St. Mary's on Saturday, February 7.
Prior to the women's basketball game, more than 100 youth from pre-K to 8th grade participated in mini-clinics that allowed them to try a variety of sports while interacting with Pioneers student-athletes. Participating teams this year included cheer, dance, wrestling, rugby, soccer, equestrian, field hockey, golf volleyball, softball, rowing and strength & conditioning. This free-flowing event provided attendees with the opportunity to explore a wide range of sports in a friendly and welcoming environment.
Following the conclusion of the clinic, the participants joined the Pioneers on the court for pregame festivities, including participating in the high five line during team introductions.

In addition to the youth clinic and in collaboration with the SHU Sport Communication & Media Department, Saturday's women's basketball game was produced for ESPN+ by an all-women production crew and on-air talent. The production was exceptionally well executed and clearly demonstrated the crew's commitment to professional development.
All participants received a US Sports Camp drawstring bag filled with SHU information, an activity booklet and healthy recipes to try. Family and friends were also invited to attend the game with complimentary admission.
The National Girls and Women in Sports Day clinic is part of the Athletic Department's broader community service efforts, which seeks to help surrounding towns and community organizations while providing opportunities for student-athletes and coached to give back to the local communities.
National Girls and Women in Sports Day is celebrated annually to honor the achievements of female athletes, recognize the power of sports in unlocking potential and to advocate for gender equality. Learn More about National Girls and Women in Sports Day here
