SOMERSET, N.J. – The Sacred Heart University women's volleyball team continued to earn a solid representation in the Northeast Conference (NEC) weekly awards, as Jasmine Rogers was tabbed NEC/Molten Women's Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week and Gaby Zovko was named Rookie of the Week.
The team picked up its first win of the season over its quartet of matches last week, defeating Rhode Island in thrilling fashion on Saturday evening, 3-1. SHU orchestrated comeback wins in both the first and second sets before a convincing 25-19 victory in the fourth. Sacred Heart's week also featured tightly contested setbacks against challenging foes in Hofstra, UConn and Yale.
Rogers collected her second career NEC weekly honor today after posting an outstanding week for the Pios. The graduate libero started all four matches for SHU, leading the team with 66 digs (4.71/set). The Ridgewood, N.J., native also added 24 assists (1.71/set) and five aces to her stellar stat line. Rogers started the week with 14 and 13 digs against Hofstra and UConn, respectively. She then came one assist shy of a double-double against Yale with 19 digs and nine assists before capping the week with 20 digs in SHU's four-set victory over URI.
Rogers reached a historical benchmark against the Huskies, as she crossed the 1,000-career-dig mark in the match. After last week's action, she ranks second in the NEC with 4.54 digs per set.
Zovko earned her third consecutive Rookie of the Week award after four strong outings for the Pios. The first year setter continued to be a jack of all trades, ranking in the top three on the team in assists, digs, kills, aces, and blocks. Zovko led the Pioneers in assists (82, 5.86/set) and aces (10), and was second in digs (54, 3.86/set). She also finished all four matches with a double-double, giving her six on the season. The highlight of her week came in SHU's win over Rhode Island, when she racked up season highs with a 29-assists, 16-dig double-double.
In the NEC, Zovko leads all players in aces per set (0.65), is fourth in digs per set (3.19) and is fifth in assists per set (6.38). She became the first Pioneer Dianis Mercado to win three straight NEC Rookie of the Week awards, as she did so in the 2010 season.
After playing four matches last week, the Pios will get a short break before opening the Villanova Invitational on Friday, Sept. 15, with a 7 p.m. tilt against the Wildcats.
