Zovko Named NEC Defensive Player and Rookie of the Week

The first year was integral to SHU winning its first two NEC matches of the season

SOMERSET, N.J. – After helping the Pios start Northeast Conference (NEC) play 2-0, Sacred Heart women's volleyball first year setter Gaby Zovko earned double recognition from the league as she was named NEC/Molten Defensive Player and Rookie of the of the Week.
The Pioneers kicked off NEC play with a bang, defeating two of the league's most formidable teams in defending conference champs FDU and 2022 NEC semifinalists LIU on the road. Sacred Heart first pulled off a reverse sweep of the Knights on Friday, winning the second, third and fourth sets to start league play 1-0. The Pios then rallied to beat the Sharks in five sets on Saturday.
Zovko earned her third Rookie and first Defensive Player of the Week honor after making an impact on both sides of the court in SHU's two NEC wins this weekend. The Bedford, Mass., native averaged 9.11 assists, 2.56 digs and 1.33 blocks per set, ranking first or second on the team in all three categories. Zovko started the week with a near triple-double on 34 assists, nine digs and eight blocks in the Pios' four-set win over FDU. The first year then set new season highs with 48 assists and 14 digs in SHU's five-set comeback at LIU.
The Pios are back on the court tomorrow to play the University at Albany at home at the Pitt Center at 7 p.m.
