Men's Basketball Concludes Road Trip on Saturday at FDU

SHU and FDU will meet for the first time this season

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University men's basketball team will conclude its two-game road trip with a visit to FDU on Saturday, January 27, at 2:00 pm. The Pioneers will look to bounce back after a road loss to Saint Francis on Thursday evening.

LAST TIME OUT:

  • Sacred Heart fell on the road to Saint Francis on Thursday, 75-71, for SHU's second Northeast Conference loss. 
  • Nico Galette recorded his third double-double of the season with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
  • Alex Sobel led five Pioneers in double figures with 17 points. He also had four steals and three blocks. 
  • Joey Reilly and Aidan Carpenter both had their fourth consecutive double-figure performance. 

OPENING TIP:

  • Sacred Heart and FDU meet for the first time this season and for the 43rd time overall. SHU holds the series advantage 26-16. Last season, the Pioneers swept FDU in conference play, the only team to beat the Knights twice. 
  • The Pioneers are 4-2 in Northeast Conference play with wins over Saint Francis, LIU, and Wagner at home and Le Moyne on the road. The pair of losses came on the road at Merrimack and Saint Francis. SHU sits in third place in the NEC standings.
  • Three active Pioneers are averaging in double figures: Nico Galette (14.1), Alex Sobel (12.0), and Joey Reilly (11.8). Sobel leads the team in rebounds (7.3), and Galette is second with 6.4 rpg.
  • Sobel is fourth in the nation in blocks with 56 (as of 1/26) and is fifth in blocks per game with 2.8.
  • SHU has four active 1,000-point scorers, which is tied for the third most in the NCAA.   
  • Reilly, Galette, and Tanner Thomas have brought in NEC Player of the Week awards for the Pioneers this season. Sobel has been a Prime Performer three times. 
  • Galette, Reilly, and Kyle McGee were voted captains for 2023-24.
  • SHU was selected first in the Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. Galette and Reilly were selected to the All-NEC preseason team. Galette and Reilly earned All-NEC first and third-team honors last season, respectively.
