HAMPDEN, Mass. – Following the third day of the UConn Invitational, the Sacred Heart University men's golf team rose to fifth place on the final leaderboard at the GreatHorse in Hampden, Mass.
After starting the day in seventh place, SHU rose to fifth on the team leaderboard with a round-three 303 (+15). For the tournament, the Pioneers carded a combined score of 896 (+32) to top MAAC foe Fairfield and Villanova by one stroke. Rhode Island won the team title by 10 strokes with a final score of 869 (+5).
Mike Rothberg finished the tournament as the highest-ranking Pioneer in a tie for sixth place. The junior ended the event with an even-par 216 (73-69-74). He capped the tournament with four birdies today, giving him 12 overall.
Pablo Lacayo remained in the top 20 with a Tuesday 76 (+4) for a final score of 222 (+6). The Managua, Nicaragua, native tied for 17th place in the 78-person field.
SHU's biggest riser today was Ethan Phillips, who climbed 17 spots with a one-over 73. The graduate transfer went from 37th to T20th with a final score of 223 (+7). Phillips concluded the UConn Invitational with 10 birdies, four coming in today's round.
Robby Zyskowski III (+24) and
Jason Pelley (+26) rounded were the final two Pioneers' finishers today in 63rd and 65th place.
The Pios are back in action on Sunday, Oct. 6, for the Matthews Auto Collegiate Golf Invitational, hosted by Binghamton at the Links at Hiawatha Landing in Apalachin, N.Y.
