
Three Pioneers Win MAAC Weekly Awards

SHU has been honored 20 times by the MAAC this season
EDISON, N.J. – After earning a pair of important wins over the weekend, the Sacred Heart University women's volleyball team won three Jersey Mike's Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) weekly awards, as announced on Tuesday afternoon.
Camryn Luginbuhl was tabbed the MAAC Player of the Week, Gaby Zovko Setter of the Week and Miliani Villarreal Libero of the Week. As a team, SHU has won a whopping 20 MAAC weekly awards this season. Luginbuhl and Zovko own five of those awards each, while Villarreal has 10.
After beating Niagara on Saturday and Canisius on Sunday, the Pioneers clinched a spot in the MAAC Postseason Tournament in their first season in the league. SHU is currently tied for fourth in the standings, which would give them a bye in the first round of the event.
Luginbuhl racked up an outstanding 47 kills (6.71/set) while hitting .340 on 97 attempts to lead SHU to a pair of MAAC wins this weekend. The senior outside hitter opened the weekend by breaking the program record for points in the three-set match with 27.0 against the Purple Eagles, tying the kills record with 24, which she set earlier this season. She hit .375 in the sweep of Niagara on 48 attempts. Then after being recognized on Senior Day, Luginbuhl tallied 23 kills and 13 digs while hitting .306 to lead the team to a four-set win over Canisius.
Zovko was all over the court for the Pioneers in their two crucial MAAC wins this weekend, as she tallied 72 assists (10.29/set), 10 kills (1.43/set), 8 digs (1.14/set) seven aces (1.00/set) and five blocks. The sophomore setter kicked off the weekend with 36 assists on the team's 46 kills in a dominant sweep of Niagara. The outstanding sophomore then tallied 36 assists again with six kills, six aces and four digs in a four-set win over Canisius.
Villarreal led the way for the Pioneers with 30 digs (4.29/set) to help the team this weekend. The first year libero was also second on the team with 11 assists (1.57/set). Villarreal started the weekend with 10 digs and two assists in the Pios' sweep of Niagara. She then racked up 20 digs and nine assists in a four-set win over Canisius, her 11th 20-dig game of the season.
Sacred Heart hits the road for its final two regular-season matches this weekend, first battling Saint Peter's on Saturday, Nov. 16, at 1 p.m.
