Men's Basketball Travels to UConn on Wednesday

The Pioneers will take on the back-to-back defending National Champions, for the first time since 2019

FAIRFIELD, Conn.—The Sacred Heart University men's basketball team will make the in-state trip to Storrs, Conn. on Wednesday evening to take on the University of Connecticut at 7:00 pm at Gampel Pavilion.

Opening Tip:

  • Sacred Heart and UConn meet on Wednesday for the first time since 2019. This will be the seventh meeting between the two programs.
  • The Pioneers fell 81-70 on Monday evening on the road at Temple. Tanner Thomas led the way with 22 points. Bryce Johnson recorded a double-double. Amiri Stewart (13 pts) and Aidan Carpenter (11 pts) scored in double figures. 
  • SHU will be on the road for the first two weeks of the season. Traveling to Dartmouth on Saturday, followed by a trip to Providence, RI for a three-game tournament at Brown.  
  • Sacred Heart returns three active members from last year's team: Thomas, who made nine appearances before missing the remainder of the season with an injury. Raymond Espinal-Guzman, a redshirt junior forward who appeared in 24 games last season, and Aidan Carpenter, a redshirt junior guard who made 30 appearances with 16 starts. 
  • Thomas was named to the All-MAAC preseason third team. 
  • Bryce Johnson returns to Sacred Heart after a year at Northeastern.
  • This year is Sacred Heart's first season as a full-time member of the MAAC.
  • The Pioneers have 10 new players on the team. 
  • Head Coach Anthony Latina begins his 12th season as head coach and 20th year overall with the Pioneers. 
  • SHU is set to officially reopen the newly renovated William H. Pitt Center on Thursday, Nov. 21, against Central Connecticut State University at 8 pm.

  • SHU dropped its season opener to Temple, 81-70, on the road on Monday evening.
  • Tanner Thomas led four players in double figures, putting up a 22-point performance in his first game back since Dec. 2, 2023.
  • Bryce Johnson put up his first double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Amiri Stewart had 13 points and a team-high four steals in his debut for the Pios. Aidan Carpenter rounded out the double-figure scorers with 11 points.
  • New Haven, Conn. native Mekhi Conner made his first collegiate start. He led the team in assists with five, and added five points and four rebounds.
  • Sacred Heart had 24 points off Temple's turnovers and outrebounded the Owls 40-34.
