Men’s Soccer Heads to Rider for MAAC Quarterfinal on Sunday

SHU begins its first-ever MAAC postseason play

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University men's soccer team is traveling to No. 2 seed Rider for its first-ever Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Quarterfinal on Sunday, November 10, at 2:00 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT
The Pioneers recorded a scoreless draw against Manhattan on Wednesday evening at Park Ave Field.
 
The Pioneers started strong in the first half, out-shooting the Jaspers 8-to-3 and 3-to-0 on goal. SHU held possession for the majority of the opening 45 minutes.
 
The Jaspers adjusted going into the second half as the teams saw more equal play. Both teams had four shots on goal.
 
Keeper Andrew Hammersley secured his third shutout of the season with four saves.
 
SCOUTING RIDER
The No. 2 Broncs have claimed Co-MAAC regular season champion honors with Siena following a 3-0 win over Mount Saint Mary's Wednesday afternoon. Rider has secured a 12-4-1 overall record and a 6-1-1 mark in the MAAC. Three Broncs secured goals on Wednesday, including William Baker, Momo Diop, and Dylan Kotch.
 
Diop leads the Broncs with 22 points, nine goals, and four assists. The junior secured MAAC Offensive Player of the Week honors on Monday, November 4.
 
Bryan Akongo has also been a strong offensive player for the Broncs, with 17 points, tabbing six goals and five assists.
 
Junior goalkeeper Adam Salama is a three-time MAAC Defensive Player of the Week this season. The Israel native has started 16 of 18 games, recording 42 saves, 0.76 GAA, and a 0.772 save percentage.
 
STANDOUT PIOS
A handful of Pios have contributed to SHU's offense this season. Junior David Garcia Gallego and junior transfer Sam McCann lead the Pios with 10 points each. Garcia Gallego has five goals, and McCann has three goals and four assists.
 
First year Ivan Morcillo has nine points this year on three goals and three assists. 
 
Graduate student Andrew Hammersley started 13 of 15 games between the pipes, securing six wins, five losses and two ties. He tallied 39 saves and three shutouts with a save percentage of 0.661 and a goals-against average of 1.54.
 
PLAYOFF HISTORY
The Pioneers are coming off two consecutive Northeast Conference (NEC) Tournament appearances. 
 
SHU made it to the NEC Championship for the first time in program history last season, falling at LIU 1-0. The Pioneers made it to the final after tallying shootout wins in the first two rounds. Sacred Heart defeated Merrimack, 1-1 (5-4 PKs), and top-seeded Saint Francis, 1-1 (5-4 PKs), to make its first-ever championship appearance.
