Hwalek and Sousa lead way for Pioneers

LYNCHBURG, Va. — Macayla Sousa's Fences win was one of the impressive showings on the day for the Sacred Heart equestrian team as it fell in its showing against No. 2 Lynchburg, 8-1, on Saturday afternoon.

SHU claimed one of the five points in the Fences portion of the day as Macayla Sousa tied her highest score of the weekend, defeating Lynchburg's Abigail Zemp 78-76 on Rain. Kylie Hwalek tied Sousa for the highest team score in the event, earning a 78 on Dream as SHU showed hard but wound up with only the one point as the Hornets grabbed wins on Chakra, HD, Dream and Kevin to take a 4-1 lead into the Flat portion.

The Pios looked to spark the comeback in the Flat portion of the day but two quick points by the Hornets negated the opportunity, taking a 6-1 lead with wins on Feefee and Elona. Emma Grimes had a strong showing in Flat, tying Lynchburg's Kelley McCormick, 73-73 on Rolo. Lynchburg grabbed the remaining two points with wins on Lia and Carl, taking Flats by a score of 4-0 en route to an 8-1 win.
