Pioneers Finish Sixth After Day One of NECs

The 800-yard freestyle relay placed sixth
GENEVA, Ohio – The Sacred Heart University women's swimming and diving team opened the 2024 Northeast Conference Swimming and Diving Championships in sixth place after finishing sixth in the 800-yard freestyle relay finals on Tuesday evening at the Spire Academy in Geneva, Ohio.
The Pioneers posted a time of 7:42.08 in the event, just 1.09 seconds off the pace set by LIU in fifth. Sophia Velleco, Melanie Sanchez, Maeve English, and Meghan Hammarlund made up the SHU A relay team on Tuesday evening.
Velleco's lead-off split of 1:51.88 moved her up to third all-time at SHU in the 200-yard freestyle.
After the first day of action, Wagner College led all teams by winning 64 points in the opening event.
The Pioneers return for day two of the NECs tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. for prelims including the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard IM, 50-yard freestyle and the women 1M diving.
