Barrett Claims Gold and NEC Record on Day Four of NECs

Pioneers sit fourth in team standings
GENEVA, Ohio – The Sacred Heart University women's swimming and diving team cruised through day four of the 2024 Northeast Conference (NEC) Swimming and Diving Championships. After another record-breaking day, the Pioneers improved to fourth place.
In the 3M dive, junior Lola Barrett broke the NEC record and school record with an impressive score of 295.70. The Wakefield, Mass., native brought home her second gold medal of the meet and her second NCAA Zone qualifying score. This will be diving coach Adam Vance's first appearance with an athlete at the NCAA Zone meet.
The Pioneers did not stop there. Senior Olivia McNicholas was right behind Barrett with a score of 265.45 to secure second place. Natalie Carbone and Christianna Tzepos took fifth and seventh place with scored of 241.95 and 224.80, respectively.
Keeping the streak going, junior Rosemery Nieto broke her own school record in the 100-yard breaststroke this evening improving over a second with at time of 1:03.49 placing third.
Ella Krikorian now sits fourth all-time at SHU with her 11th place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:06.38. Also, in the 100-yard breaststroke, Olivia Velleco secured 22nd with a time of 1:08.26.
Continuing the record-breaking trend, Sophia Velleco secured the school record with her 100-yard backstroke lead-off split in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 56.97. The relay of Velleco, Nieto, Meghan Hammarlund and Emma Haas also broke the school record, placing fifth with a time of 3:50.43.
First year Abby Hernandez swam an impressive 2:06.07 in the 200-yard butterfly putting her third all-time at SHU. Returning in A finals, Hernandez finished seventh with a time of 2:08.62. Emma Chambers placed 11th with an improved time of 2:07.96. Also improving her time from the morning, Melanie Sanchez finished 13th with a time of 2:08.27. Devon Corvaia placed 19th with an improved time of 2:11.69.
In the 100-yard backstroke, first year Kristen Baker swam an impressive 57.75 placing 13th and now sits second all-time at SHU.
Having swam a time trial, Haas secured a CSCAA National Invitational qualifying time in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 25.11.
Central Connecticut State still holds the lead after day four with a score of 1122.5.
The Pioneers return for the final day of NECs tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. for prelims including the 1650-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle and 200-yard breaststroke.
