Sacred Heart’s GRGC Executive Director Takes 2024 Honor
MILFORD, Conn. - He wants his pro shop to have a fun vibe. Anyone who has walked into the pro shop at Sacred Heart University's Great River Golf Club over the last four years can attest to the entertaining environment.
That philosophy, along with attention to detail, a great selection of quality merchandise and a collaborative management style, earned GRGC Executive Director Jason Loomis another accolade.
The PGA of America made Loomis its 2024 National Merchandiser of the Year for public facilities. Loomis is only the fifth professional from Connecticut to win a national award from the PGA of America.
Loomis, who was the Connecticut Professional Golfers' Association PGA 2021 Merchandiser of the Year, said Great River carries all the staple items and brands you find in most pro shops, including Peter Millar, Greyson and Footjoy. What set them apart was creating custom apparel and accessories that were only sold at the club.
"Having the university relationship, we were able to target two market segments and combine the university and golf course logos to create even more unique products," said Loomis, who has doubled the revenue of the pro shop since he arrived at GRGC.
The award recognizes PGA of America Golf Professionals who have excelled in business and merchandising in the promotion of golf. Loomis was honored in Orlando last week at the PGA's national convention, and the distinction has not worn off on him.
"To be named the 2024 National Merchandiser of the Year for public facilities from the PGA of America is an accomplishment I never imagined, it still feels surreal. To win a local PGA section award is a great honor, to win a national award is beyond words," said Loomis. "Even though the award might have my name on it, it is an award for everyone at the club and university. I can't thank everyone at Great River and Sacred Heart enough for their support in growing our golf operations, which ultimately led to this award."
A golf professional since 2012, Loomis has been with Great River since 2019. He is a certified golf instructor and has a degree in golf management from Keiser University in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
