Heath was tabbed the Pitcher of the Week, while Bender was Rookie of the Week
SOMERSET, N.J. – After going 3-1 last week, the Sacred Heart University softball team won two Northeast Conference (NEC) weekly awards, as Emily Heath was named the Pitcher of the Week and Cierra Bender Rookie of the Week.
The Pios went 3-1 last week, picking up non-conference victories over Fairfield and Siena. SHU followed that up by splitting a doubleheader at FDU, taking the nightcap 4-0 on Friday in Teaneck, N.J.
Heath earned her second-career NEC weekly award by going 3-0 last week with a 0.00 ERA over 12.2 innings pitched. The Coventry, R.I., native finished with nine strikeouts and tossed her second-career complete-game shutout. Heath first went 3.2 innings without allowing a run in the team's win against Fairfield Wednesday. She followed that up by throwing the final 2.0 frames in SHU's over Siena Thursday. Her final appearance was her best, as she shut out FDU over 7.0 innings with six strikeouts to lead the Pios to a road NEC win.
Bender led the Pioneers with a .615 batting average (8-for-13), five RBIs and three doubles. The first year infielder tallied multiple hits in all but one game over the week, going a perfect 3-for-3 against both Fairfield and Siena. Against the Stags, she drove in four of SHU's six runs with a pair of two-RBI hits. In SHU's win over FDU Saturday, she went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a double.
The Pioneers welcome Yale to Pioneer Park for a home doubleheader on Wednesday, March 27. The first of the two games will start at 2 p.m.
