Women's Lacrosse Defeats Stonehill in NEC Showdown

Ellie Holt records her 100th career draw control in home victory

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart University women's lacrosse team continues to prove to be one of the dominant teams in the Northeast Conference (NEC). The Pioneers held off Stonehill College by a final score of 11-7 Wednesday afternoon at Campus Field.

The Pioneers were led offensively by seven difference scorers, including Maggie Araneo, who tallied a team-high four goals, three of which came on free-position attempts. Shae Insinga recorded a multi-goal game behind two goals, while Kelly Nolan posted a goal and collected an assist.

Ellie Holt was also a force to be reckoned with for the Pioneers. The senior attack recorded a season-high nine draw controls, which allowed her to hit a significant milestone in her career. She recorded her 100th career draw control at the end of the third quarter.

Lisa Martin earned her fourth win of the season between the pipes for the red and white and finished the afternoon with six saves.

SHU (4-5, 3-1 NEC)

Of Note:
Stonehill's Molly Mae Hughes kicked off the scoring with a man-up goal three minutes in, but back-to-back goals from Emma Kittredge and Nolan gave the Pioneers the one-goal advantage, 2-1, with 6:28 left in the first period. With 3:01 on the clock, Sofia D'Agostino put one past Martin to even the game at 2-all after an excellent feed from Abby Ahearn.

The second period started with Taylor Farace and Ellie Edwards finding the back of the net against Skyhawk keeper Claire Smith. Up 4-2, Stonehill kept within arms reach of the Pioneers by trimming the deficit to within one on two occasions, 4-3 and 5-4.

Sacred Heart held the upper hand in the third period, outscoring the Skyhawks 4-0 behind Araneo's hat trick and Maci Black's fourth goal of the season.

The Pioneers led by as many as five, 10-5, in the fourth quarter following an unassisted goal from Insinga with 10:37 remaining in regulation, and never looked back, securing the home victory.
