
Pioneers Place Second at MAAC Rowing Championships

Sacred Heart had its best finish in program history
PENNSAUKEN TOWNSHIP, N.J.-- The Sacred Heart University rowing team had its best showing in program history at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships, taking home second place on Sunday afternoon on the Cooper River. The Pioneers finished in the top three in each of the four races on Sunday to bring in 34 points.
Jacksonville claimed the 2024 MAAC Title with 42 points, followed by SHU (34), Fairfield took third place (29), followed by Marist (25), Stetson (20), Drake (9), and Canisius (6).
The Pioneers opened the day with two boats racing in the 2nd Varsity 4. The "A" boat of Sara Bojorque, Olivia Nguyen, Kadence Faucher, Sophia Gatto, and Emma Giedraitis finished third at 08:36.187. The 2V4 "B" boat of Adriana Lamano, Alexandria Yost, Kelsey Hottenstein, Caitlyn Bergman, and Kerryn Olson took fifth place with a time of 8:49.405.
The 2V4 brought home the Pioneer's first second-place finish of the day as Sophia Bittar, Julia Walker, Caitlin Mahoney, Lillian Wilson, and Liz Luttman finished at 8:10.238, just 2.494 seconds behind first-place Jacksonville.
The Pioneers 2V8 of Amanda Rego, Rose Kelly, Selena Hescock, Ava Manzo, Emily Gorski, Giulianna McCarthy, Lucia Catino, Gabrielle Gottschall, and Sydney Marcy finished in third place at 7:37.598 behind Fairfield and Jacksonville.
Sacred Heart had a strong finish of the day to secure the second-place finish overall. In the 1V8, Sydney Kaiser, Cara McDonald, Olivia Chasse, Jordan Italia, Emma Scheibl, Doria Lukasik-Dres, Saige Harper, Mia Purcell, and Susan Munley placed second with a time of 7:14.170, just 8.985 seconds behind Jacksonville. With the second-place finish, the Pioneers secured its silver medal at the MAAC Championships for the program's best finish.
Sacred Heart also had five athletes selected to the All-MAAC teams. Sydney Kaiser and Emma Scheibl were named to the All-MAAC second team. Cara McDonald, Doria Lukasik-Dres, and Saige Harper earned a spot on the All-MAAC first team. McDonald and Harper receive first-team recognition for the second straight season.
