SHU Departs NEC in Style
FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Sacred Heart Pioneers are leaving the Northeast Conference with more commissioner cups than anyone.
SHU, which transitions to the MAAC this summer, has won the Brenda Weare Commissioner's Cup for overall supremacy in the NEC and the Joan Martin Women's Commissioner's Cup again this year.
The Pios have won a record 13 women's cups and an NEC-best 10 overall titles, while this was the 10th time they have captured both cups the same year. SHU also has a conference record 24 combined cups, including two for the men.
SHU won this year with 244.90 points overall while shattering the Joan Martin Cup scoring record with 158.82 points. The Pios owned the previous record with 140.85 in 2008-09.
"The record-breaking accolades are a wonderful way to complete another successful year of SHU Athletics," said Judy Ann Riccio, the school's director of athletics. "This is the result of the hard work, dedication and commitment of our student-athletes, coaches and staff. It's such an honor to be associated with this talented group. I am so appreciative of their contributions in building on the tradition of greatness that is SHU Athletics. We've enjoyed being a member of the NEC and are thrilled to go out with the most commissioner cups."
SHU joined the conference in the fall of 1999 while moving out of Division II and has been building momentum in the 21st century, finishing among the top three for the Weare Cup the last 18 consecutive years. That includes Pio triple crowns (overall, women's and men's) in 2008-09 and 2010-11.
Cup points are awarded in each NEC sponsored sport. For field hockey, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's track and field, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's volleyball, football, women's bowling, women's swimming and diving, softball, women's lacrosse and baseball. The final regular season standings are used to determine Cup points. Starting with the 2012-13 season, the conference began awarding three bonus points to the NEC Tournament champion in those sports. In all other sports, points are awarded based on the finish at NEC Championship events.
SHU, in 2023-24, won NEC regular season titles in baseball, women's basketball, women's lacrosse and women's volleyball, while capturing tournament championships in field hockey, women's basketball, women's golf and women's outdoor track & field.
