Five Pioneers named Student-Athletes of the Year

WINTHROP, Mass. — For a second-consecutive year, the Sacred Heart University women's ice hockey team topped the New England Women's Hockey Alliance (NEWHA) All-Academic Team honors, placing 30 Pioneers on this year's list, the conference announced Friday.

The conference honored 164 student-athletes this season with the Pioneers topping the list. To be nominated for the NEWHA All-Academic Team, student-athletes must have achieved at least a 3.0 GPA in both the first and second semester. Student-athletes who maintain the highest GPA in the league are awarded Student-Athlete of the Year recognition.

This season the Pioneers had five student-athletes earn Student-Athlete of the Year nods. First-year Diana Bishopp and a trio of sophomores in Julianna Koman, Olivia LaRoche and Macey Merdinian earned the honor as well as junior Kerryn O'Connell as all five student-athletes maintained perfect 4,0 GPA's this year.

SHU also had four student-athletes recognized as having achieved All-Academic Team honors for four or more years. Graduate Students Sophie Lupone and Cassie Nevers received the distinction five times while seniors Erin Fleming and Samantha Ostrowski earned the honor for a fourth time.
