PRINCETON, N.J.—The Sacred Heart University women's rugby team opened the season with a 67-0 win on the road at Princeton on Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers swept their first National Intercollegiate Rugby Association (NIRA) game to start 1-0, while the Tigers opened the season 0-1.
Reese Torticill and
Ashley Torres-Brown scored a pair of tries, and
Alyssa Cunningham made six conversions, scored on a penalty kick, and added a try for the Pioneers.
Fabiola Millien-Faustin,
Makena Wright,
Samantha Melvin,
Megan Chura, and
Caitlyn Caldon also scored for Sacred Heart.
Torticil, Millien-Faustin, and Torres-Brown each scored a try, and Cunningham made two conversions as SHU led 24-0 at the half.
Wright scored right out of the break, and the Pioneers never let up. Chura and Melvin scored the first tries of their collegiate career en route to the 67-0 final.
Sacred Heart will return to action at home on Friday, Sept. 13, at 7:00 pm at Park Ave Field.
